4rd Annual Bull SaleSaturday, February 25, 2012. 1 p.m. |
Please make plans to join us for our 4th Annual Bull Sale will be held Saturday, February 25, 2012 @ 1:00, at Harkin Hills Ranch, Osceola, Iowa.
High Point Genetics is a family seedstock operation producing top quality Angus and SimAngus cattle. Located in the green hills of south central Iowa, our cattle are raised in conditions that mimic commercial cow-calf operations in our area. Our cattle are bred to be balanced in all economically important traits and maintain excellent dispositions in an eye appealing package.
High Point Genetics offers registered Angus and SimAngus breeding stock and markets bulls and females through private treaty sales at the farm. We value our repeat buyers, with most being neighbors and friends who live nearby.
Our cowherd is managed on a typical southern Iowa cow farm with pastures consisting mainly fescue, brome and native bluegrass. Our cowherd is managed similar to the commercial cattle industry in our area. The only supplement our cows receive is salt and mineral. In addition, unlike most seed stock operations, we do not creep feed our calves. We want to know which cows are doing their job, and which ones are not.
Traits we believe cannot be compromised are:
- Our cows must calve on their own and on time each year.
- They must be easy fleshing
- They must be sound in their structure and athletic, with excellent feet and legs to insure longevity within our herd
- They must have excellent udders
- They must have excellent dispositions
- They must have capacity and gain-ability to ensure performance in their offspring
- Carcass traits and feed conversion are important to us, however we do not single trait select at the expense of the essential traits mentioned above. We select proven AI sires and use ultrasound technology to continue advancing the carcass traits within our herd.
- We select for cattle that are slick haired. We believe this is a trait that is not emphasized enough within the industry. In fescue country this is essential. Cattle that do not shed with ease do not thrive in our environment.
- We take our responsibility as a seed stock producer very seriously. As your bull supplier, it is our goal to help your cow herd become more profitable. If our cattle do not work for us, they will not work for you either.
We are proud of our cow herd and enjoy giving pasture tours during the summer. The foundation of our cow herd is strong on proven cow families developed by TC Ranch in Nebraska, Leachman Angus Ranch in Montana, Bell and Sons from Iowa, and my father Dan Oswald. As both my father and Dick Bell would say, “It takes a lifetime to build a cow herd.” That is why we strengthened our foundation several years ago with females that were not only produced in time honored programs, but excelled in them. Our TC Ranch cows were purchased as 10,11 and 12 year old cows that stood the test of time at TC Ranch and produced many herd bulls that made their Denver carload and sold at the top of their annual bull sale. Both the Leachman and Bell cows were purchased through total dispersions and carried production records in the top 15% of their herd with many having earned pathfinder status. The Simmental influenced cows from my father all trace back to 2 cow families that began in the late 70s when I was starting 4-H.
We are passionate about our program and look forward to developing our partnership with you!
